OPENING CONCERT OF THE LOHISOITTO FESTIVAL: SUMPTUOUS STRAUSS AND A FEAST OF MUSIC FOR THE STAGE
Le bourgeois gentilhomme Suite, Op. 60
Es gibt ein Reich (Ariadne’s aria) from the opera Ariadne auf Naxos
Final scene from the opera Ariadne auf Naxos
Under our conductor Olari Elts we bring you a magnificent programme of sparkling gems from the world of opera. A masterly opera composer, Richard Strauss composed the incidental music for the play Le bourgeois gentilhomme incorporating an opera, Ariadne. The topic would not leave him in peace, and he therefore used the music for not only the suite to be heard in this concert but also a whole new opera. Ariadne auf Naxos would in time become one of his most popular operas. The combination of irresistible music with a plot in which the lavish entertainments of the Viennese aristocracy go hand in hand with ancient Greek mythology appeals to audiences irrespective of time and place. In addition to Ariadne’s aria from this opera we will hear the emotional final scene in which soprano Miina-Liisa Värelä – star of this summer’s Savonlinna Opera Festival – and tenor Mati Turi really have a chance to demonstrate their skill. Joining them will also be sopranos Johanna Lehesvuori and Hanna Rantala, and mezzo-soprano Elli Vallinoja.
